•WELCOME SMARTYPERS!
We are pleased to announce the return of Smartype for medical transcriptionists and the opening of our new blog. Check back, as we will be adding content in the future for productivity software users.
As we launch the new release of Smartype, we will be discussing our most common questions and comments right here, so maybe the answer to your question will already be on the blog. We also will be including tips and tricks for Smartypers and anyone who uses expander/productivity software.

So happy there is a new version of Smartype. I still used the last version of it even though there were bugs using it with Word 2003. Smartype was not updated in so long, I had given up hope on their being a new version. Very happy to have been proved wrong. Smartype is a solid program and an essential tool for the medical transcriptionist.
Great to see you here Lynne. Thanks for making the first comment on the blog. I hope to hear from you after you try out the new software. If you need the Getting Started documents, shoot us an email at info@smartype.com.

I have Smartype too, love it. Have had to call so many times when over the years for codes so I can put it on new computer, etc. Was holding off on updating my MS Word (have 2000) as it meant then I would have to call again….guess now I can just get the new version instead, yea! I hope we can copy/transfer in our current library so we don’t have to start from scratch! Looking forward to the upgrade!
Hey Laura! You can transfer the majority of your Smartphrases, etc. There are many more phrases already in the vocabulary of the new Smartype than in the original ST, and I found that plus what I was able to import had me off and running quickly. It is a few-step process, and I can walk you through it when you are ready.

I’m new to general transcription and am looking for a good typing expander. How well does Smartype work for general transcription?
Hi Kay,
There is an English word library available in Smartype, so it should work for you. You can add your own phrases individually or as a list. I would suggest just downloading the 30-day trial on the website and see if it works for you. It is half price until the end of January, so give it a whirl.

Wow! Really excited to see this. I have used ST for many years, starting back in DOS for WP5.1 I use it with Word 2003 now. Will the new version work with Word 2003? And will the new version address the inconsistency of capitalization? So glad to see you “back in action.”
Hi Jody and welcome!
Me too – I’ve used ST since WP51/DOS. The caps drive me crazy in 2003 ST too. The new ST does work in Word 2003 (2007 and 2010, open office, Word Perfect for Windows, notepad, e-mail, etc.) Right now it does not do autocaps at all, but that is at the top of the development list for upcoming updates, so hopefully very soon because I want it too!

Glad to see this product is back as I have used others and was not pleased with them. I also used it with WP 5.1 and still use it in Microsoft Word 2007 where it does not work totally correctly but still good enough for my needs. I now am in need of a newer version as the way I need to work in the future is totally changing. Thanks so much for updating. Hopefully, I can convert my old blocks to this newer version with ease.
Hi Robin, thanks for stopping by. You can convert your old phrases, I sent you an e-mail. Give it a 30-day trial and see how it works for you!

I cannot even tell you how excited I am to see there is now a windows-based Smartype! I used it for years when I worked from home and loved it! When I transferred jobs and moved in-house to a hospital, they all used Instatext. While that product is relatively useful, it isn’t nearly the same as Smartype. I love how Smartype is pre-built with the most used phrases/words already in the system. I found I was having to build the most basic information with Instatext, and in the end it isn’t nearly as wonderful as Smartype. Thanks for updating Smartype and making a great product even better!
Hi — so I was looking to order the ‘older’ version of SmartType to load in Word 2010 until I came across this. How do I order the new version? Is there a 30-day free download trial? What is the cost? I am beginning to support a new medical office and I feel I will be lost without SmartType but was concerned about the older version working for me in Word 2010. I have used SmartType for nearly eight years now and will be lost without it.
Go to http://www.smartype.com. There is a 30-day free trial. Cost is $150. I’m very glad that we were finally able to come up with this version that works on virtually all platforms, so that you won’t be lost without it.
I am just trying to clarify if this is the same Smartype originally offered by http://www.theprogrammers.com or Stedman’s. I got that version back in 2001 and fell madly in love with it, but when I upgraded to Windows Vista and Word 2007, it ceased being fully functional, and Stedman’s told me there would be no more updates for it. I am working as best I can with its partial functionality and just relying more on my autocorrect, but I miss the ability to add words, phrases, and documents that I used to have.
Anyway, if this is the same program, I would be interested in purchasing it, but only if it has the same or more capability as the old program. Could you let me know? I appreciate it.
It is not exactly the same software, but it has very similar functionality. There is a 30-day free trial at http://www.smartype.com. So you can try it out. Check out the For New Users page, as well.
Thanks for the info:)
